Sats make small payments, Lightning invoices and fee amounts easier to read without writing many leading zeros. When a source displays sats, preserve the integer count before converting it to BTC. This avoids losing scale through rounded decimals and makes Lightning invoices, on-chain fees, and small wallet balances easier to compare with their original record.

BTC is used to measure bitcoin balances, transaction outputs, fees and market prices. The protocol's issuance schedule is separate from the exchange rate shown by a venue. For a reproducible Bitcoin value, retain the BTC quantity, price pair, venue or index method, timestamp, and quote asset. A wallet balance and an exchange balance also have different custody evidence, even when both are written in BTC.

Risks the number does not show

Start with the complete sat count
Keep every digit and remove display commas before doing the division. Ten thousand sats is 10000 in the calculation.
Divide by 100 million
Move the decimal point eight places to the left. For example, 250,000 sats becomes 0.0025 BTC.
Keep leading zeros visible
Leading zeros show scale. They do not make the balance a different token or change who controls the bitcoin.
