Bitcoin satoshi calculator.

Convert BTC and sats with an exact denomination rule: 1 BTC always equals 100,000,000 sats.

Quick answer

BTC and sats at a glance

The unit rule never changes

  • Multiply BTC by 100,000,000 to get sats.
  • Divide sats by 100,000,000 to get BTC.
  • A dollar price is separate and needs current market data.

Common Bitcoin and satoshi amounts

Move the decimal eight places to convert BTC to sats.

BTC and sats name the same asset

A satoshi is not a separate token. It is a smaller way to count bitcoin, just as cents are a smaller way to count dollars. Wallets may let you switch the display between BTC and sats without changing what the wallet controls.

The name honors Bitcoin’s pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. The plural is usually written as “sats.” A person can receive and spend a fraction of one bitcoin; owning a whole coin is not required.

How to calculate the conversion

To convert BTC to sats, multiply the BTC amount by 100,000,000. To convert sats to BTC, divide the sat amount by 100,000,000. For example, 250,000 sats divided by 100,000,000 equals 0.0025 BTC.

This math is exact for the denomination. A fiat conversion is different because BTC/USD changes with market trades and can vary across venues. Read the Bitcoin price page before treating a dollar result as current.

Where smaller units appear

Wallet balances, on-chain outputs, and miner fees are commonly shown in sats. Fee rates use satoshis per virtual byte, written sat/vB, because that makes small network costs easier to compare. The Bitcoin fee calculator multiplies transaction size by that fee rate.

The Lightning Network can track values smaller than one satoshi inside payment channels by using millisatoshis. One thousand millisatoshis equal one satoshi. When funds settle on the Bitcoin blockchain, the on-chain result uses whole satoshis.

Satoshi calculator questions

How many satoshis are in one bitcoin?

Exactly 100,000,000 sats. That fixed relationship does not depend on Bitcoin’s dollar price.

Does the number of sats in a bitcoin change with price?

No. Price measures bitcoin against another asset. BTC and sats are two denominations of bitcoin itself.

Is one satoshi the smallest possible Lightning payment?

Lightning implementations can account in millisatoshis inside channels. On-chain Bitcoin outputs settle in whole sats.

Use Bitcoin units without rounding away meaning

BTC and sats name different-sized units of the same asset. The relationship is fixed, but display choices and decimal rounding can still confuse a reader.

Move the decimal exactly eight places

One BTC equals 100,000,000 sats. Converting BTC to sats multiplies by that number; converting sats to BTC divides by it.

  • 0.1 BTC equals 10,000,000 sats.
  • 0.001 BTC equals 100,000 sats.
  • 1 sat equals 0.00000001 BTC.

Price is a separate question

The denomination does not change with the dollar price. Only a fiat conversion needs a current market reference.

  • Use sats for small Bitcoin amounts.
  • Keep BTC for protocol totals and larger balances.
  • Add USD only when a timestamped rate is relevant.
