In one sentence

The smallest standard unit of bitcoin: 0.00000001 BTC.

01

Satoshi (sat) meaning

One bitcoin contains 100,000,000 satoshis. The unit is named after Bitcoin's pseudonymous creator, Satoshi Nakamoto. People use sats to express small payments without a long string of decimal places.

02

How it works in Bitcoin

Sats are units in wallet and transaction calculations, not separate tokens. Converting between BTC and sats moves the decimal point eight places and does not require a blockchain transaction.

03

A simple example

50,000 sats equals 0.0005 BTC. If a wallet changes its display from BTC to sats, the underlying value and keys stay the same.

04

Why Satoshi (sat) matters

This idea provides a foundation for reading Bitcoin wallet, network and market explanations without confusing the asset with the software around it.

05

What people often get wrong

Do not confuse satoshis with fiat cents or assume one sat has a fixed dollar value. Its fiat reference changes with the BTC market price.

06

Quick checks before using the term

  • Can I explain the term without mentioning price?
  • Which part is a protocol fact and which part depends on a product?
  • What would I verify before using it?

Apply these questions to the concrete example above. A precise answer is more useful than repeating the definition without naming the actor, rule or failure path.
