Why difficulty moves
Bitcoin aims for one block about every ten minutes. Every 2,016 blocks, the protocol compares actual time with the two-week target and adjusts mining difficulty. Faster blocks push difficulty up; slower blocks pull it down.
A displayed estimate can change until the retarget block arrives. It is an observation, not a prediction of mining revenue.

It is an estimate, not a meter
No central machine counts every hash. Public dashboards estimate hashrate from recently mined blocks and the current difficulty. Short windows jump around because block discovery is random. Longer windows are smoother but slower to show a real change.
More hashrate changes the cost of attack
Hashrate shows how much proof-of-work competition is visible. It does not reveal miner profit, energy source, ownership, or location by itself. Pair it with the Bitcoin mining learning path and the mempool explorer.
What pool share does—and does not—mean
A pool coordinates work
A mining pool builds candidate blocks and divides rewards among participating miners. A named pool’s block share is not the same as ownership of every machine connected to it. Miners can change pools.
Window choice matters

Connect mining measurements before drawing a conclusion
Hashrate, difficulty, pools, block pace, subsidy, and fees describe different parts of proof of work. No single number is a complete mining-health score.
Hashrate is inferred
Public dashboards estimate total work from observed block production and difficulty. Short windows can jump because block discovery is random.
- Name the estimation window.
- Expect short-term noise.
- Compare the trend with difficulty.
Pool share is not miner ownership
A pool coordinates block templates and payouts for many contributors. Workers can move between pools, and a pool label does not reveal hardware ownership or location.
- Distinguish pools from facilities.
- Use more than one observation period.
- Do not infer geography from a pool name.
