Nonce meaning
Nonce means number used once. Bitcoin's block header contains a 32-bit nonce that miners change during proof-of-work search. Each change produces a different header hash and another chance to fall below the target.
How it works in Bitcoin
Modern ASICs exhaust the header nonce space quickly. Mining systems also adjust extra nonce data in the coinbase transaction, time, or transaction ordering, which changes the Merkle root and creates fresh header possibilities.
A simple example
After testing all ordinary nonce values for one header template, a miner can alter the coinbase extra nonce, rebuild the Merkle root, and search a new set.
Why Nonce matters
Mining terms connect proof of work, block production, incentives and energy. They should not be used as shorthand for node validation or guaranteed profitability.
What people often get wrong
The nonce is not a secret and does not encrypt the block. Anyone can verify the successful header by hashing it.
