Short answer
- Decide whether this is a small spending wallet or long-term savings before comparing brands.
- Reject any wallet that cannot explain custody and recovery in plain language.
- Test receiving, sending and restoring with a small amount before moving a serious balance.
Step 1: decide who controls the keys
A self-custody wallet gives you the information needed to authorize spending without asking a company. A hosted exchange account is not the same thing. Reddit's phrase “not your keys” is incomplete unless you can back up, protect and restore those keys yourself.
Ask whether the app can reset your account, freeze a withdrawal or recover access without your backup. If it can, another party may control part of the process. If only you control the recovery material, losing it may be final. Choose the responsibility you actually understand, not the label that sounds strongest.
Step 2: match exposure to the balance and frequency
A phone wallet is convenient for a small active balance but lives on an internet-connected device. A hardware wallet keeps signing keys in a purpose-built device and is usually a better fit for savings whose loss would be painful. A desktop coordinator such as Sparrow can pair with hardware while showing transaction details and coin control.
Do not copy arbitrary dollar thresholds from Reddit. Device cost, personal risk and technical ability differ. Use a simple rule: keep only what you intend to spend on a hot device, and move savings to a setup you have tested and can recover.
Step 3: inspect backup and recovery before features
Read the official recovery guide before installing. Learn whether the wallet uses standard seed words, a wallet-specific format, multisig files or channel backups. Confirm what must be saved and what a seed alone will not restore. Lightning wallets require special care because channel state may matter.
Write the backup offline and never photograph it. A passphrase is not a PIN and cannot be reset. For multisig, store the configuration needed to reconstruct the wallet as well as geographically separated keys. Run a recovery test while the balance is trivial.
Step 4: verify downloads and perform a test path
Follow the vendor's official site to the app store or release page. Search ads and direct-message links are common phishing paths. Confirm the receive address on a hardware display where available, make a small withdrawal, wait for confirmation, then send part back.
The comparison page ranks by use case rather than popularity. Recheck current platform support and security notices before buying a device or moving funds; a Reddit post can remain visible long after its details become obsolete.
